More Hollywood Studios Say ‘No Smoking’

Universal Pictures is one of the studios that have put a ban on using smoking in movies. Hollywood is now divided for there are many studios that still want smoking in there movies, but there are many people think that the smoking in movies will get to kids. The people who want to ban smoking want cigarettes out of films rated G, PG or PG-13, but films but films with R or NC-17 ratings are allowed to have smoking in it. Not everyone wants smoking to be band like Bill Condon who wrote and directed “Dreamgirls” said, “It’s a chilling idea,”, “Movies are supposed to reflect reality,” “You’re taking away a detail that is one of the more defining aspects of a lifestyle”. Lastly Mr. Condon said, "If they succeed, they may well glamorize smoking again", talking about the ban on smokeing in movies, and the youth would want to smoke even more.

Since silent films smoking has had a major part in film symbolism. When men smoke they usually are gambling and smoking. When women smoke in films it is thought to be that attractive and make them seductive. One of the most famous actors Humphrey Bogart has been recognized with smoker roles and some of his most famous roles have involved a thick mist of cigarette smoke. Since World War II smoking has been less frequent in movies then before, because health hazards of smoking have become more well known. Ever since then there has been a anti-smoking movement and which they took smoking out of family movies. Smoking in movies the characters are portraying an anti-social person or even criminal.
