Felon's Rights

The city of New York is undergoing scrutiny for strip seacrching misdeamenor inmates sent to Rikers Island jail. Before July 2002 all new inmates were forced to undergo a complete strip search. This strip search was performed with ten to twelve inmates naked together and had their mouth, ears, nose, armpits, genital areas, navels, and anal cavities all searched by correction officers. These searches were performed continuosly through July 2002, but were illegal due to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruling in 2001 that strip-searches of misdemeanor suspects were illegal. The only way they were allowed was if the officials suspected that the inmates were carrying any thing illegal on them. On October 4th, 2007 the Department of Corrections admited that thousands of nonviolent inmates have been strip searched despite the 2002 court rulings against this and they were now entitled to payment for damages caused.
