No Nukes For Obama

On October 2nd, Senator Barack Obama, Democrat of Illinois, will propose eliminating all the nuclear weapons in the worlds. He believes that the U.S should greatly reduce their number of nukes in their arsenal. At a speech he gave at DePaul University, Obama said that he believed the threat of nuclear terrorism would go down if America also got rid a lot of their weapons. He then went on to say that the reliance on nuclear weapons have become “increasingly hazardous and decreasingly effective.” According to details which were provided by his campaign, Obama will urge for a diplomatic ban on "production, development , and deployment of intermediate-range missiles." Obama plans on using a combination of both diplomacy and force to prevent Iran and North Korea from developing and harnessing nuclear power and weapons.

This controversy about nuclear weapons is similar, though not as dire, as the Cuban Missile Crisis which took place during the Cold War where the Soviet Union had set up nuclear weapons in one of America's neighboring islands, Cuba. This brought an unimaginable amount of tension and animosity between the two superpowers and eventually led to a negation with the Soviet Union where they would remove their weapons from Cuba if the U.S removes their nukes from surrounding posts around the Soviet Union such as in Turkey and in Italy.

Obama needs a history lesson. The Nuclear Non-Profliferation Treaty was created for a reason. The reason being for the world to know who has nuclear weapons and who does not. It is stupid to eliminate nuclear weapons. Our nuclear weapons help protect the United States and its people. Terrorism would still be a problem whether we had nuclear capabilites or not. Most likely terrorist would want to attack us if they knew that we had no way of striking back. I feel that nuclear weapons give the American people a sense of security, and that if Obama wants to get rid of all nuclear weapons he is not fit to be President of the United States.

After the Cuban Missile Crisis, the US and Soviet Union engaged in a series of talks that eventually led to reductions in the number of weapons each country held.

Limited Test Ban Treaty of 1963
Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty I
Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty II
Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty

Ultimately, the US would, with Great Britain and the USSE, sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which has now been signed by 190 nations.

This is one of the most ignorant statements I've ever heard.By eliminating nuclear weapons, the United States would be making a dangerous mistake. The only reason that we developed nuclear weapons was as a last resort against an overwhelming enemy. The mere thought that a presidential candidate could be this nieve is appalling. Especially when you cosider that enemies that the U.S. is facing at this time, such as Iran, North Korea, and also the lingering war on terror, how can you think that we could afford to eliminte our last resort.
