Haters
Anthony Fortunato , John Fox and Ilya Shurov were charged with murder under the state Hate Crimes Act of 2000. They were found guilty of manslaughter and second degree in petty larceny after beating and chasing a gay man to death. The victim, Michael J. Sandy, 29, died in the hospital. The three men contacted Michael via a gay chat room and chose him as a robbery victim because the men felt as if gay people can't fight nor defend themselves. The defense: Anothony's lawyer claims that it could not be a hate crime for Anothony himself was gay. When put to the stand and ask his sexual orientation, Anthony Fortuanto replied, " I don't know... I could be homosexual. A homosexual. Bisexual.”
Hate crimes such as crimes against homosexuals can be compared to many events throughout our American history. As much differences we find in this country, there is also as much hatred and prejudices for them as well. One specific group who is notorious for being one of the biggest " haters" of the 20th century would be the Ku Klux Klan. The original Klan was constructed shortly after the Civil War and their purpose was much more different then Klan of the modern times. The original Klan had a purpose to fight against the changes that were occurring, as well as the robbery of possessions as well as their original life style. After fighting and protesting as much as they felt fit the original Klan officially closed in 1877. The KKK now is more focused on bring terror to anyone diffrent from what "they" are. This group terrorizes, any-non white racial groups, catholics, Jews, homosexuals, etc, basically anyone different. Their tactic: spreading hate and terror. Huh! You would think that as a country we would learn from past ignorance and mistakes, but on the contrary hate crimes are as prevalent in our country as before and the "haters" keep on coming.
